Enabling and managing your consent form

The instructions below are for desktops and laptops only.

The consent form gives visitors a clear chance to agree to your data collection and privacy terms before they interact with your chat widget. This is essential for complying with data privacy regulations (for example, GDPR) and ensures your data practices are transparent to visitors.

Enable the consent form

1. Log in to your tawk.to account.

2. Select the correct property.

3. Click Administration in the top menu.

4. In the left menu, click Chat Widget under Channels. Then, scroll to Consent Form.

5. Click the dropdown menu under Display Option and choose:

- Everyone — show the consent form to all visitors, or

- Only for visitors from EU — show the form only to EU visitors.

Once enabled, the consent form appears before visitors can start a chat.

Customize the consent form

1. In the Consent Form section, click Edit Content next to the Display Option dropdown.

2. Edit the Consent message to explain clearly what data you collect and why. Keep the message simple and direct.

3. Add a link to your privacy policy by filling in the Privacy Policy link and Privacy Policy Text fields.

4. Customize the text for the decision buttons (Opt-In Button/Opt-Out Button) to match your brand.

5. Click Save.

Tips:

  • Use plain language that non-technical visitors can easily understand.

  • Explain any cookies or tracking that will be used if visitors consent.

  • Keep the privacy policy link prominent and working.

Disable the consent form

1. Click the Display Option dropdown.

2. Select Disabled.

When disabled, the consent prompt will no longer appear to visitors.

Additional considerations

  • Cookies and local storage
If you enable the consent form, tawk.to will not set cookies or local storage related to the widget until a visitor consents.

  • Testing
After you enable or edit the form, test it in different browsers and devices (including private/incognito windows) to confirm it appears and functions as expected.

  • Language & accessibility
Provide consent text in the languages your visitors use, and ensure the form is readable by screen readers when possible.

  • Record-keeping
Keep a copy of the consent message and the date you made changes — useful for audits or support requests.
