Merging Contacts

The instructions below are for desktops and laptops only.

Keeping your contact list free of duplicates makes it easier to manage customer information and maintain accurate records.

Contacts can be created during live chats, through Pre-Chat and Offline forms, CSV imports, and software integrations. To learn more about how contacts are created, see this guide: How does tawk.to create a contact?

If you have multiple contact profiles for the same person, you can merge them into a single contact. During the merge process, you choose which details to keep before confirming the changes.

Steps to merge contacts

1. Log in to your tawk.to account, and select the correct property.

2. Click Contacts on the left navigation bar.

3. The Contacts list opens and displays all your contacts.

4. Select the contacts you want to merge. Then, click the Merge Contacts icon in the upper-right corner of the Contacts list.

5. Choose the contact details you want to keep, then click Merge.

6. Review the merged contact details and click Confirm.

After the merge is complete, the newly merged contact profile opens.

Best practices

  • Review each contact carefully before merging to ensure they belong to the same person or organization.

  • Check the contact details during the preview step and keep the most accurate information.

  • Merge duplicate contacts regularly to keep your contact list organized and make customer information easier to find.

Additional considerations

  • Merging contacts cannot be undone. Review the selected information carefully before clicking Confirm.

  • Only merge contacts that represent the same person or organization. Merging unrelated contacts may result in inaccurate customer records.

  • If you need to update contact details after merging, open the contact profile and edit the information. To learn more, see this guide: Customizing a Contact
