How does tawk.to determine my visitor’s location?

The instructions below are for desktops and laptops only.

tawk.to estimates a visitor’s location using their public IP address — the address visible to tawk.to servers when someone loads your widget.

IP addresses can indicate a visitor’s country, city, and region, but the accuracy depends on the visitor’s internet service provider (ISP) and network setup.

How to find a visitor’s IP and location in the dashboard

1. Log in to your tawk.to account.

2. Select the correct property.

3. Click Inbox in the top menu.

4. Open a chat or ticket.

5. Click the Details tab on the right panel. Then, select More info. The Device section shows the visitor’s public IP address. The Location area shows the visitor’s country, city, and region when available.

Additional considerations

  • IP-based accuracy
Location data is estimated using the visitor’s public IP address. While country-level information is usually accurate, city and region details may vary depending on the internet service provider (ISP) and network routing.

  • VPNs and proxies
Visitors using a VPN, proxy, or similar masking service will appear to be located where that service’s exit node is based, not their real location.

  • Mobile networks
Mobile carriers often route traffic through centralized servers, which can cause detected locations to show a different city or region.

  • Data privacy
IP addresses can be considered personal data under laws such as GDPR. Handle and store this information according to your privacy policy and applicable regulations.

  • Practical use
Use IP and location data for general insights or chat routing, but avoid relying on it for precise geographic targeting or user verification.
