How to test push notifications on mobile

In this guide, we’ll show you how to test push notifications on the tawk.to mobile app for Android and iOS devices.
For Android

The tawk.to mobile app has a built-in feature for you to easily check if push notifications are working properly. 

Follow these steps:


1. Open the tawk.to app and login.


2. Select You at the lower-right corner.

3. Ensure Do not disturb is turned off.

4. Scroll down to Settings and select App Settings.

5. Under Alerts, select Test notifications.

6. Hit Send a Test Push Notification. To test for a specific property, hit Pick a property and select the property from the list.

7. You should receive a test notification within 30 seconds.

And the following message if the test is successful:

Start a test chat

Go to your website (on a different browser or device), send a message through the chat widget, and see if you receive the notification on your mobile. Tapping on the notification should take you to the chat.


Didn’t receive the notification?

  • Double-check the Android system settings to ensure notifications are enabled.

  • Check your battery optimization settings to ensure tawk.to is allowed to run in the background.

  • Clear the cache for the tawk.to app in your Android settings (Apps > tawk.to > Storage > Clear Cache). Then, restart your Android device.

For iOS

The tawk.to mobile app has a built-in feature for you to easily check if push notifications are working properly. 

Follow these steps:


1. Open the tawk.to app and login.


2. Select You at the lower-right corner.

3. Under Settings, select App Settings.

4. Select Notifications & sounds.

5. Ensure your notification and sound settings are enabled. Then, select Test Notifications under Push Notification Troubleshooting.

6. Select Start Push Notification Test.

If the Do Not Disturb mode is enabled, you’ll be asked to disable it (you can re-enable it later).

7. You should receive a test notification shortly. Then, you’ll see the following message if the test is successful:

Go to your website (on a different browser or device), send a message through the chat widget, and see if you receive the notification on your mobile. Tapping on the notification should take you to the chat.


Didn’t receive the notification?

  • Double-check the iOS system settings to ensure notifications are enabled.

  • Check your Focus settings (Do Not Disturb) to ensure tawk.to notifications are allowed.

Important considerations
  • Notification delay
    There might be a slight delay (a few seconds) in receiving push notifications depending on your network connection and device performance.

  • Background app refresh (iOS)
    Ensure that Background App Refresh is enabled for the tawk.to app in your iOS settings (Settings > General > Background App Refresh). This allows the app to receive updates even when you're not actively using it.

  • Battery optimization (Android)
    Check your battery optimization settings to ensure tawk.to is allowed to run in the background.

  • Multiple devices
    If you are logged into the tawk.to app on multiple devices, you might receive notifications on all of them. You can manage your online/offline status within the app to control where you receive notifications.
