How to greet visitors with a welcome message using a Trigger
The instructions below are for desktops and laptops only.
Your new tawk.to property automatically sends a message to visitors when they arrive on your website—just like how a good customer assistant greets you when you enter a brick-and-mortar store.
This is done via a trigger. A trigger is an automatic message sent to your visitors based on specific conditions. The default welcome trigger greets visitors shortly after they land on any page of your website.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to modify the welcome trigger to customize your welcome message.
Follow these steps to modify the default trigger and welcome message:
1. Log in to your tawk.to account.
2. On your dashboard, select the property you want to modify the welcome message for. Hover over the property name to ensure you’ve selected the correct one.

3. Click the gear icon on the top menu to go to the Administration panel.

4. On the Administration menu, select Triggers under Settings.

5. Click the “Welcome message” trigger to open and edit it.

6. You can set the Trigger Name, Delay time, and Agent’s Name.

7. Set the Trigger Message under Set your message.
Note: Emojis are allowed. You can also add up to 4 Suggested messages. These will appear as buttons visitors can click to start the conversation.
Pro tip: With AI Assist, you can train your AI agent to answer these questions exactly like you would.

8. Click Save.
That’s it! Your visitors will be greeted with your new welcome message.
Here are a couple of tips to refine your welcome message:
Keep your message simple and include a CTA. Sometimes, a classic "Hey, how can we help?" with a call to action is all you need.
Personalize your message based on visitor goals, behavior, or demographics. Experiment with different greeting styles to find what resonates best with your target audience.
Include suggested messages targeted at your audience to maximize visitor-to-chat conversion.
If you’ve enabled AI Assist, you can customize how your AI agent will greet visitors when they start a chat. Read this guide to learn more:
