Integrating Google Ads with tawk.to

You can use Google Ads conversion tracking with tawk.to to see how your ads impact chat activity, helping you measure ROI and improve your ad strategy.

How it works

Google Ads conversion tracking lets you see what happens after a customer interacts with your ad, such as signing up, making a purchase, or starting a chat.

When you link your tawk.to account with Google Ads, you can track when a visitor starts a chat after clicking on your ad. This interaction is counted as a conversion in your Google Ads dashboard.

Note: You’ll need a Google Ads account and access to conversion tracking before you begin.

Step 1: Set up a Google Ads Conversion

First, set up a conversion action in your Google Ads account and generate your conversion tracking tag. For detailed instructions, see Google’s guide: Set up conversion tracking for your website - Google Ads Help

Note: Copy both the Global site tag (gtag.js) and the Event snippet from your Google Ads account. You’ll need them in the next step.

Step 2: Add the Conversion Code to your website

Add the Global site tag

Paste the Global site tag (gtag.js) in the <head> section of your website.

Trigger the conversion when a chat starts

You can use the tawkApi.onChatStarted event to trigger the Google Ads event snippet when a chat begins.
Replace AW-XXXXXXX/xxxxxxxxxx with your event’s specific send_to ID from your Google Ads event snippet.

Step 3: Test and verify your setup

To ensure your conversion tracking is working:

  1. Open your website in an incognito or private browser window.

  2. Start a chat to trigger the conversion event.

  3. Use Google Tag Assistant or Google Ads Conversion Tracking Diagnostics to check if the event was fired correctly.

If everything is set up properly, the conversion should appear in your Google Ads account after a short delay.

Important considerations

  • Reporting delay
It may take a few hours for conversions to appear in your Google Ads dashboard.

  • Visitor consent
If you're collecting user data, ensure you comply with privacy laws (such as GDPR) by getting proper consent before enabling tracking.

  • Multiple campaigns
Running more than one ad campaign? Create a separate conversion action for each one you want to track accurately.
