Updating your Telegram bot settings

The instructions below are for desktops and laptops only.

This guide explains how to update the settings of a Telegram bot connected to your tawk.to property.

Note:
  • You can update the Inbox Name of a connected bot. This is how the inbox appears in your tawk.to Dashboard.
  • The Bot Username is assigned by Telegram and cannot be changed from within tawk.to.

Updating your bot’s Inbox Name

1. Log in to your tawk.to account.

2. Select the correct property.

    3. Click Administration on the left navigation bar.

    4. Click Integrations in the left submenu.

    5. Open the Messaging tab, and select Telegram.

    6. Click the Settings tab and locate the bot you want to update in the connections list. The bot must have a Connected status. Then, click the three-dot menu () on the right side of the bot, and select Edit.

    7. In the pop-up window, update the Inbox Name.

    8. Click Save.

What you can and cannot change

    SettingEditable in tawk.to?How to update
Inbox NameYesEdit from the three-dot menu in the Settings tab
Bot UsernameNo (read-only)Change via @BotFather in Telegram
Bot TokenNoDisconnect and reconnect using a new token

    The Bot Username

The Bot Username is controlled by Telegram and cannot be edited in tawk.to. However, you can change the Bot Username via BotFather.

Follow Telegram’s instructions for managing your bot username in the following guide:
    https://core.telegram.org/bots/features#creating-a-new-bot

    The Bot Token

You cannot paste a new token in the Edit modal.

To rotate the token (for example, after using /revoke in @BotFather):

    1. Disconnect the existing bot in tawk.to.

    2. Reconnect the bot using a new token.

For detailed steps to disconnect and reconnect a bot, see:
Disconnecting your Telegram bot from tawk.to

    Important considerations

    • Only bots with a Connected status can be edited. If the bot is disconnected, reconnect it first.
    • Changing the Inbox Name only affects how the inbox appears in your tawk.to Dashboard. It does not modify the bot’s name or settings in Telegram.
    • If your bot token is compromised, first revoke it in @BotFather, then use Reconnect in tawk.to to enter the new token.
