Understanding SEO for white-labeled Knowledge Base pages

If you’re using tawk.to’s Knowledge Base and have enabled the Remove Branding add-on, you can white-label your Knowledge Base by setting it up on a custom domain or subdomain, such as docs.yoursite.com.

This gives you more control over your branding, but it’s important to understand how it affects your site's SEO.

Can SEO authority be shared between a subdomain and the root domain?

No. When your tawk.to Knowledge Base is hosted on a subdomain (e.g., docs.yoursite.com), it is treated as a separate entity by search engines. That means it won’t inherit the SEO authority of your main website (yoursite.com), even with white-labeling enabled.

This limitation is not specific to tawk.to; it’s based on how search engines evaluate subdomains.

Why are subdomains treated separately?

Search engines such as Google generally view subdomains as distinct websites. As a result:

  • SEO efforts on the subdomain (e.g., content optimization, backlinks) improve rankings for that subdomain only.

  • SEO authority is not automatically shared between the main domain and the subdomain.

  • Each domain builds its own search engine reputation and visibility.

What does this mean for your Knowledge Base?

If your white-labeled Knowledge Base is hosted on a custom subdomain like docs.mydomain.com, it will build its own search visibility over time. However, it will not directly contribute to the SEO performance of mydomain.com.

Currently, there isn’t a built-in feature to merge SEO authority between your Knowledge Base and your root domain.

Important considerations

  • This is standard behavior for most platforms using subdomains.

  • You can still optimize your Knowledge Base content to perform well in search engines by using relevant titles, keywords, meta descriptions, and internal links.

  • Cross-linking between your main website and your Knowledge Base can improve user experience and encourage traffic flow between the two.
